my life thus far

came into this world in new york / lived in england for five years / returned with a heavy British accent and was teased mercilessly (quickly lost the accent) / as a teen, moved to marin county, california (just a bit of a culture shock) / took a year off after high school and had more jobs than most people do in an entire lifetime (these included theater manager, restaurant hostess, camp director, deli worker, waitress, au pair, baker, insurance rep) / decided to go to college so i could get a "real job" / studied english at uc davis but soon changed majors, finding my niche in american studies / won a prized writing award for a piece on olive oil and another about a circumcision party / wrote articles for the school's alternative paper, the third world forum / won a grant for research on my thesis subject: the blending ethnicities of two of san francisco's adjacent communities, north beach and chinatown / won an academic scholarship to study in paris the summer after graduation (c'etait magnifique!) / graduated with a b.a. in american studies and an english minor / moved with my significant other to southwestern oregon where i landed a job as a reporter for a daily newspaper / highlights there included interviewing comedians Pat Paulsen and Ruth Buzzi as well as then-Sen. Bob Packwood / crossed the pacific and taught english on the island of kyushu in japan for two years / while in japan, edited a magazine for english teachers / also while in japan, met donar, who became my husband in 2000/ received my m.s. in journalism from columbia university / won a fellowship for young journalists to spend the summer in finland studying the sauna (something about those european summers) / moved to phoenix, arizona (another culture shock) / became the editor of phoenixnewtimes.com / returned to the san francisco bay area and took a job as the technology reporter for the ang newspaper chain (the position was at the san mateo county times in silicon valley) / had a number of cover stories in the chain's papers, including the oakland tribune / left there to pursue freelance journalism / freelance highlights have included pinch-hitting for the washington post as well as the san francisco chronicle, business week, the modesto bee, and money magazine / co-authored business week's guide to the best business schools two times / volunteer with charityfocus.org (read the bio they wrote about me) and also volunteer with ebuddies / currently a regular contributor to the wall street journal / but my biggest news yet: donar and i are the very happy parents of gabriella kai garone goss (who is six) and zoe pi garone goss (who is two).
